Henry Grave was born in Albany, NY on October 5, 1925. In 1943 he married his high school sweetheart Emily Church. In 1944, Henry enlisted in the US army and was sent to Europe. He was taken prisoner by German scouts in Sarlat, Belgium in December of 1944 and was incarcerated in Stalag VIIA near Moosberg, Germany until the camp was liberated in April of 1945.
After the war, he returned to Albany to learn that his wife had died while he was incarcerated. He met his infant son Teddy for the first time.
Henry attended Columbia University on the GI Bill and went on to earn his doctorate in archaeology in 1957. For two years he was an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania after which time he changed careers and began working as a private investigator. In 1972 he made an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the United States Congress.
Dr. Grave began consulting with the Association of Cruising Vessel Operators in 1984 and became their lead investigator in 1990. When not solving crimes on the high seas, he spends his time in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where he manages a semi-professional Roller Derby team. He maintains an active social life and travels frequently to visit his son Teddy, who is a cardiologist in Boston.
